Disability Income Coverage

Disability Income provides you with income if you are unable to practice medicine due to sickness or accident.

Coverage takes effect on the 1st of the month following the date the insurance company approves your application. Increases in coverage take effect once the insurance company approves your application. Age-related changes in coverage take effect on the policy anniversary date (June 1) next following the change in age. Future Insurance Options take effect when exercised in accordance with the periods specified.

Changes in smoking status take effect on the policy anniversary date (June 1) following the date the insurance company accepts your evidence of change in status.

You may cancel coverage at any time by providing written notice to Doctors Manitoba. Coverage ceases at the end of the period in which premiums have been paid.

A refund of premiums is paid if total claims and expenses are less than total premiums collected annually. No premium refunds are available for premiums paid on coverage in excess of $5,500 per month.

Your coverage is portable. If you move outside Manitoba and maintain your affiliation with Doctors Manitoba, you may:

  • continue your disability insurance coverage as long as you pay the premiums
  • apply to increase your coverage as long as you are a resident of Canada
